My honey has crystallized. What can I do?

It’s not uncommon for crystals to develop in the honey jar before you get a chance to use it. Don’t worry, your honey is still good! Just place the honey jar in a pot of warm water, set the heat to medium-low, and stir until crystals dissolve. You can also place the jar in a pot of hot water and leave it alone until it liquifies.

How does honey help my allergies?

While there are no scientific studies that have definitively proven that honey can help with allergy-based flareups, there are decades worth of testimonials and stories indicating that people believe it helps.

What does honey from a monofloral source versus a multifloral source mean?

Monofloral honey, or single flower honey, differs from multifloral in that the majority of nectar for the honey is collected from a single type of plant, while with multifloral honey the nectar is collected from multiple types of plants.

Why is some honey more expensive than others (Example: Tupelo Honey)?

Some types of honey are very specialized. Single-sourced honeys are very difficult to come by, and some types of honey are only available with some cooperation from mother nature. This makes certain honeys very limited and, therefore, more expensive.

What is Colony Collapse Disorder?

Colony Collapse Disorder is what occurs when the majority of worker bees in a colony disappear and leave behind a queen, food, and remaining immature bees. In the early 2000s there was a huge rise in the number of disappearances of the western honeybee colonies in North America. Colony Collapse Disorder causes significant economic losses due to the fact that many agricultural crops worldwide are pollinated by honeybees.

Does honey have an expiration?

Honey never goes bad! It may begin to crystalize over time, but that can be reversed.

I keep hearing the term “royal jelly”. What is this?

Royal Jelly is the substance secreted by worker honeybees. The worker bees feed this substance to larvae which are being raised as potential queen bees.

What exactly is honeycomb? And is it edible?

Honeycomb is edible – and quite tasty! Honeycomb is the cluster of hexagonal beeswax cells that fill the inside of a beehive. These cells are what get filled with honey.

How do beekeepers get bees to work one particular flower?

While it’s not possible for beekeepers to force bees to work one particular flower, beekeepers can strategically place their bees in a certain area at a certain time to try to achieve the desired result.
